The Montana Scene Hidden Key Whitefish MT

I The Montana Scene North Team escaped just in the nick of time (56 seconds left) from The Vigilantes game at Hidden Key Escape Game in Whitefish, MT l

The Montana Scene team across the state has grown quite a bit since the re-brand just over three years ago. The team has grown to over 30 employees during the summer months, and with the addition of the Kalispell store (and other projects in the works) the team will continue to grow.

Owners, Sean and Melissa, have always wanted to help with job creation in their community and across the state. We want you to get to know our team a little bit better, so we have created The Montana Scene Employee Chronicles. Each month we will highlight different employees from across the state. Our team members work together to make this Montana family business grow and flourish and we are so grateful for the work they put in each day to continue our mission of creating fashionable products that are inspired by the love of adventure, the outdoors and, of course, Montana.

First up, Kelsey, our manager at The Montana Scene Bozeman

The Montana Scene Bozeman Kelsey Maidens

How would you describe your day job to a child?

I would say I am in charge of a clothing store that is Montana specific and we sell awesome t-shirts and sweatshirts. I work with two other amazing employees. And I get to talk to a lot of people who are from Montana and not from Montana.

If you could choose one person to meet that you have never met before who would it be?

John Mayer - only because I recently found out that he has a house in Paradise Valley and - this is going to sound very weird - and we figured out that he lives on the river. I thought it would be fun to canoe down the river to find where he lives.

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded? Why?

I have my apps organized by color and I like very few apps. The last one is called TeuxDeux - it is a to do list app. Or I guess Posh Mark - it’s like eBay, but strictly clothes and cosmetics. You can find a really good brand for cheaper. I found a Valentine's dress that was usually $350 for $50.

You’re a new addition to the crayon box. What color would you be?

Emerald Green - that color looks good on everything and everyone. I have green eyes and if I wear green it makes them brighter.

If you could be any animal in the world, what animal would you be and why?

My first instinct would be to say a unicorn because they live in fairy tale land. Or I would be my dog Buckwheat because he has a perfect life. He is spoiled and happy and he runs around the property all day, lays on the couch, gets fed when he wants.

If you woke up and had 2,000 unread emails and could only answer 300 of them, how would you choose which ones to answer?

First of all, I would think that I’m in trouble. That would be my first thought. I would respond to the ones that would defuse whatever trouble I’m in. The ones that are most important.

Where are you from? (How did you end up in Montana?)

I’m from Scottsdale Arizona. My hometown is Portland. I lived in Scottsdale for seven years. My family lives in Montana and it was a nice change of pace.

What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?

My brother convinced me that the reason why Frosty’s tasted so good was because they put mayo in it. So I never ordered a Frosty. It wasn’t until three years ago that I looked up the recipe and there was obviously no mayo. I’m very gullible.

What was the last picture you took on your phone?

It was a screen shot and I sent it to my boyfriend and it says “no woman has ever shot a man while he was washing the dishes.”

Who is your hero? Why?

My hero, this is also cliche, both my parents. My mom because shes the best ever and she has the hardest job in the world. My dad because he has shaped us into the best versions of ourselves and he is amazing. So he is the best role model.

What was your first impression of The Montana Scene?

The first time I came in, my first impression was that everything is so soft! It was something that I would wear every day, I could dress it up or down. I think I was thinking how can I incorporate this into everyday. I would easily pair a cool graphic tee with a skirt and accessorize it with some crazy jewelry.

What’s the best thing to happen since you started working at The Montana Scene?

The best thing is definitely meeting the people that come in who are native to Montana. They give you the scoop of where you need to go and what you need to see. Lots of Glacier suggestions and Fairy Lake. I figure out what to do and see based on what they say. Everyone is so friendly and is a travel guide. And they are so in love with Montana they say you have to go there and you have to see this.

Next up, Mackenzie, the manager of The Montana Scene Missoula

The Montana Scene Missoula 101 E Broadway

How would you describe your day job to a child?

I would tell them that I get to sell really awesome clothes - Montana made clothes, and that I get to work with a bunch of fun people.

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded? Why?

The most recent was Appear for my book club. I went to school in Oregon for a little bit and met my best friends, most live in LA - one in Colorado and one in Seattle. Our book club is called Tequilla Mocking Bird. Every Monday we get on the app Appear - super simple way to see into the group and see each others faces, it gets overwhelming and loud, but it’s really fun. We have a private group on Facebook where you do polls and pick best sellers and read. Right now we are reading The Good Girl. We send how many pages we have done in a week and then we just chat for half an hour about our book.

What inspires you?

I would say that my little brothers inspire me. Since growing up with them they are the ones that I have with the back of my mind with choices that I make.I want to set an example for them and think about who I want them to become. They are a big process for how I think about my day and how I treat people.

What was your first impression of The Montana Scene?

I was really excited about it. I had been to the Whitefish store. I felt like I had walked into a Montana version of Pinterest.

What’s the best thing to happen since you started working at The Montana Scene?

Everyday all of our customers, they are genuinely so kind and so nice to talk to and I don’t think you find that often in customer service. They want to have conversations with you and tell them about their adventures and that happens everyday which is awesome.

What do you wish other people knew about The Montana Scene?

I wish they knew that we catered to men and children as well as all of our women's clothes.

What might someone be surprised to know about you?

They are always surprised when they find out that I play hockey. I’ve been playing hockey since 4th grade. The hockey community in Missoula is huge.

What is your favorite book?

Harry Potter and The Goblet of Fire. I love all the magic that they have in the Goblet of Fire and all the new magic they are learning about. It’s the most sad book, but I love it.

What is the best purchase you’ve ever made?

The best purchase that I have ever made would be my plane ticket to Ireland. I went November of 2016. So my book club all went and we were there for 10 days and we traveled from one end to the other and we went without a plan and it was the best time ever.

What is your favorite food to cook? Favorite restaurant?

I love to make cake! I love to bake, but cake is my favorite. I love to celebrate birthdays. I mean you don’t need an excuse to make cake. My favorite restaurant is probably Wasabi in Whitefish.

Where are you from? (How did you end up in Montana?)

I am from Missoula! Starting out in high school I wanted to get away from Missoula and get away from my home town, I went to Oregon and loved it, but I’m such a homebody and missed my brothers. I decided that traveling was the best way and knowing that everything was temporary. I lived in Whitefish for a while, but it came down to where my family and friends were and they’re all here.

Who is your hero? Why?

My hero is probably both of my parents. My mom and dad. My mom because of the way she grew up. It was really hard and she has become the kindest most hard working person. She always has a smile on her face. My dad is my hero because he is so adverturey and he works really hard and he just is someone who lives life the way that he wants to and he is super cool. He loves the outdoors. Both my parents I just love and want to be like.

Last up for this months Employee Chronicles, Laura - Director of Merchandising and Inventory

The Montana Scene Montana Laura

How would you describe your day job to a child?

I make the stores look pretty and have lots of stuff in them.

What is your favorite blog to read?

The Day Book blog. It's a lifestyle blog. The girl that does it is super real. No idea who she is and she's a good writer. Quality content is important and quality writing are really important to me. (Laura also has her own blog - Montana Laura!)

What’s the most recent app you’ve downloaded? Why?

It's called Like to Know it and it's an Instagram plugin where you screenshot someone's outfit and the app tells you wear to buy the product. I did it because I like clothes.

What was your first impression of The Montana Scene?

That it had great Montana gifts that I wanted to buy while I was in Hawaii but never did. I had a Pinterest board filled with the products before we finally moved back home to Montana.

What’s the best thing to happen since you started working at The Montana Scene?

Opening Kalispell. It's been such a welcoming, awesome community and the store front is to die for!

What is the best purchase you’ve ever made?

Adoption fee to get my dog Nana.

The Montana Scene Kalispell 219 S Main

If you have to change your name, what would your new name be, and why would you choose that name?

Olive, so that when people came over and people asked if I'm there they can say there is a whole jar of them in the fridge in the fridge.

What is your favorite food to cook? Favorite restaurant?

Favorite food to cook myself….laughs... I'm famous for my chicken fajitas. And my favorite restaurant is Anna Millers in Hawaii. It was a super old school diner that was open 24/7.

What ridiculous thing has someone tricked you into doing or believing?

When I was a kid my dad used to put baby carrots in his socks and tell me that my 11th and 12th toes would come in when I was older.

Who is your hero? Why?

My hero is Paul (Laura's Husband), he has seen a lot of things and somehow manages to still be fairly normal.

The Montana Scene Montana Laura Kalispell

What do you wish other people knew about The Montana Scene?

That a lot of effort goes into every product from designing to printing locally to tagging and barcoding. It's not some chain store, but it's also not one store and it's growing.

What five people would you have over for dinner if you could (dead or alive)?

Post Malone, Will Ferrell, JK Rowling, Ellen and Drake.

Check back for Employee Chronicles 2 where we continue to get to know the team!
